Energy Fireplace – Buying Guide: What to Watch Out For & Traps to Avoid

Discover what you need to check before purchasing an energy fireplace. Learn about misleading market practices, fake project photos, and fabricated reviews.

Choosing an energy fireplace is not just an aesthetic addition to your home. It is a significant investment in warmth, efficiency, and energy savings. However, with the market booming, disinformation phenomena are also emerging that can negatively affect your decision.

In this guide, we compile everything you need to know to choose the right energy fireplace, while avoiding unethical tactics that unfortunately occur all too often.

What is an energy fireplace and why choose one

An energy fireplace offers up to triple the efficiency of a traditional one. Thanks to the closed combustion chamber, air control capabilities, and modern construction materials, it ensures high thermal performance, lower wood consumption, and reduced pollutant emissions.

⚠️ Market traps to beware of

  1. Certifications that… aren’t what they seem

Some professionals claim to have “certification for designing and building energy fireplaces” from bodies such as the Chamber of Crafts. In reality, these organizations do not provide technical certification; they simply register businesses. Be cautious of impressive statements that are not backed by technical documents or official licenses.

  1. Manipulated reviews

A growing trend is artificially boosting ratings through events where participants are entered into a draw in exchange for a “glowing” review. Numbers may impress, but they don’t always reflect the true customer experience.

  1. Foreign projects presented as local ones

Luxurious homes abroad with contemporary architecture and stunning fireplaces are often presented by Greek companies as supposedly their own projects.
A typical example: photos from a residence in the State of New York have been used to showcase a project allegedly done for a client in Nea Erythraia.

This residence is in the USA. Using it on Greek websites as a local project creates misleading impressions.

  1. Ecological exaggerations with no technical basis

The trend toward eco-friendly choices is clearly positive. However, when we see phrases like “use of biodegradable materials in the heat chamber of the energy fireplace”, caution is needed.

Such a statement may create impressions of “green technology,” but in essence, it is nothing more than an ecological claim without technical backing.

The truly ecological choice in an energy fireplace is:

  • high thermal efficiency
  • low emissions
  • and EcoDesign 2022 certification, not… a heat chamber that “melts responsibly.”

When we refer to a heat chamber, we mean:

The metal box/cabin or surrounding “shell” built around the energy fireplace to contain and direct the hot air, aiming to distribute heat via grilles or ducting.

This chamber is insulated internally for reasons of:

  • Thermal performance
  • Preventing overheating of materials around the fireplace
  • Better heat distribution into the room

Most common insulation materials:

Rockwool

    • Excellent thermal insulation and high heat resistance
    • Not biodegradable
    • Eco-friendly only if free of resins/phenols

Calcium Silicate Boards

    • High temperature resistance
    • Inert, non-combustible, but also not biodegradable

Technical opinion:

No, there are no biodegradable insulation materials suitable for use in the heat chamber of an energy fireplace.
And there shouldn’t be — because the heat chamber operates in an environment of high temperature, pressure, and sometimes humidity.

A biodegradable material would decompose or lose its properties over time, risking loss of insulation, overheating, or even fire.

Therefore, the use of the term “biodegradable” for insulation in heat chambers is misleading and technically incorrect.

Final conclusion:

Ecology is not a marketing slogan. It’s a matter of substance, technical expertise, and respect for the customer.
