In a context where environmental regulations are becoming stricter and the demand for renewable energy is increasing, BioCAT sought a balance between protecting public health and achieving the European Union\u2019s energy goals.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text woodmart_inline=&#8221;no&#8221; text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]Lithodomi, closely following technological developments and research trends in the field, presents\u2014encyclopedically\u2014the nature, objectives, historical evolution, achievements and implications of the BioCAT project, highlighting its capabilities and prospects.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text woodmart_inline=&#8221;no&#8221; text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>The need for technological intervention<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The European Union has set strict targets for energy and the environment, the well-known \u201c20-20-20\u201d: a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 20% share of renewables and a 20% reduction in energy consumption. Biomass\u2014and especially firewood\u2014is an integral part of this strategy.<\/p>\n<p>However, small-scale wood-heating appliances are responsible for significant emissions. Simply banning their use is not a viable solution. What is needed instead is a technological transition that preserves the benefits of biomass while reducing emissions.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>How the research started<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The BioCAT project began in 2013 under the EU\u2019s 7th Framework Programme (FP7), aiming to develop clean combustion technologies for domestic applications. The main partners were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TFZ (Bayerisches Technologiezentrum, Bavaria), specializing in biomass<\/li>\n<li>The research organization BE2020+ (Austria)<\/li>\n<li>Appliance manufacturers such as STUV, RIKA, Hapero, Staffieri<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Collaboration between industry and research enabled the creation and testing of realistic solutions applicable to commercial products.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>BioCAT technology: Structure and operation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The technology is based on two levels of intervention:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A. Primary optimization:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved combustion-chamber design (airtightness)<\/li>\n<li>Controlled air supplies (primary, secondary, air curtain)<\/li>\n<li>Thermal insulation with refractory materials such as vermiculite or chamotte<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>B. Secondary treatment with a catalyst:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BioCAT catalyst is based on a ceramic honeycomb made of mullite or cordierite, coated with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Platinum (Pt): acts as the main catalytic metal for CO oxidation<\/li>\n<li>Palladium (Pd): enhances action for VOCs at lower temperatures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The active surfaces achieve CO conversion ratios up to 90% and VOC &gt; 60% at temperatures of 200\u2013350\u00b0C. The honeycomb form (200\u2013400 cpsi \u2013 cells per square inch) maximizes catalytic action with minimal flow resistance.<\/p>\n<p>These catalysts enable a significant reduction of carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and particulate matter (PM), especially during phases such as ignition or incomplete combustion. In this way, BioCAT attempts to bridge the gap between high environmental performance and the practical operation of wood-heating appliances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Experimental evaluation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Testing was carried out in laboratories, accredited test centers (EN13240\/13229) and in real homes. Measurements showed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CO: reduction up to 80%<\/li>\n<li>VOC: reduction up to 48%<\/li>\n<li>PM: reduction 10\u201337%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The catalyst did not exhibit deactivation after repeated use cycles, even in the presence of sulfur, chlorine or phosphate compounds. Application examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In pellet stoves, BioCAT is integrated at the back of the combustion chamber.<\/li>\n<li>In wood-burning fireplace inserts, it is incorporated in the flue-gas pathway.<\/li>\n<li>Pilots were also performed on biomass boilers &lt;50 kW.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Devices that integrated BioCAT showed compliance with German BImSchV Stufe 2 and Austrian regulations (15a B-VG).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text woodmart_inline=&#8221;no&#8221; text_larger=&#8221;no&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Prospects and limitations<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Despite the encouraging results, challenges remain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Integration into existing products<\/li>\n<li>Cost viability<\/li>\n<li>Testing with a variety of firewoods (e.g., olive, oak, beech)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The technology is technically mature and ready for commercial deployment, contributing to the green transition without compromising thermal performance<\/strong> (provided it is integrated at the design stage.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>Lithodomi\u2019s position<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With many years of experience in wood-heating appliances, Lithodomi recognizes the need for clean and efficient solutions. Although we do not (yet) market catalyst-equipped appliances, we closely follow BioCAT developments and actively support knowledge dissemination.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>BioCAT demonstrates how collaboration between science and technology can offer realistic solutions for cleaner, more sustainable use of biomass.
